GUGULESIZWE RESEARCH CAMP

Gugulesizwe Research Camp – a secret hideaway named for the scientists and researchers for whom it was originally built – offers a different Maputaland experience, and the chance to explore this area at your own pace. With just four rooms – and compelling ocean views – Gugulesizwe Research Camp is intended for exclusive use bookings only.

If you’ve always wanted your own tropical retreat, then you’ve just found it. Only a short stroll across the grassy dunes from Gugulesizwe Dive Camp, Research Camp is run completely separately to ensure your privacy and exclusivity.

Your seclusion is entirely optional – the forests, dunes and grasslands teem with life, and are yours to experience whenever you wish it. Or you could simply relax in the main area with its superbly equipped kitchen and breath-taking sunset deck.

The shaded braai spot is perfect for balmy coastal evenings beneath the date palms, as the stars come out and your day is touched by tropical magic.

ACCOMMODATION

Four rooms with superb sea views. Each has two single beds, with romantic mosquito nets and all linen. The en-suite bathrooms have ample hot water provided by wood-burning donkey boilers. The rooms are set far enough apart to be private, yet close enough to feel inclusive. Fairy lights, Mozambican carvings and vibrant carpets contribute to a welcome sense of fantasy.

FACILITIES

The beautiful main area offers superb views across the grasslands to the ocean. Tastefully decorated with a chic yet homely feel and modern rustic charm, it’s an inviting space in which to gather, cook, eat and entertain. The lounge deck and braai area also offer the chance to relax, with the splash pool is just a few steps away.

ACTIVITIES

Kids can run free in complete safety while you enjoy the maritime breezes and fresh air. Witness the golden light on the grasses at sunrise and sunset, then take the short 4×4 drive to the superb Lala Nek snorkelling site and the endless sandy beaches. Say hello to our neighbours and try to spot an iconic Nguni cow.

DINING

Gugulesizwe Research Camp offers both self-catering and catered options. The kitchen in the main area has everything you need to prepare snacks, braais and dinner party food – it’s all a matter of taste. Our catered option (at additional cost) needs to be booked in advance and involves three meals a day, with menus reflecting our organic, largely plant-based approach to cuisine.
